Second Floor Shear Walls...Under
slab work...
Getting the second floor shear wall forms in-place, this is
the area of the building where Social Services
will be located. The the right, workers clear extra earth from the slab area
to obtain the proper thickness of
concrete. |

Electrical Stub-Outs
The photo on the left is where Anthony and Brad are working to place
conduit stubs.
They are both Apprentices with Taft Electric, Anthony is second year and
Brad just started.
In speaking with the Foreman, he likes to put two Apprentices together, one
teaching the other.
He said that everyone does a little of everything.
The Journeyman, was digging the trench for the next series of conduit
Anthony and Brad were to work on. That's is really cool! The right photo
show a floor pull-box. |

Trenching and Formwork...
The photo on the left shows the next retaining wall...the
earth in the footing was cause when the adjacent hill was cut back for
safety. The photo on the left shows the placement of two steel columns and a
lower slab elevation (area between to form-boards). |

Second Concrete Lift...Forms Off
Defects Discovered.
This is a common, fixable defeat. It is
caused by two requirements
not allowing a perfect implementation in the field. The defect can bee seen
near the top of the wall, to the left edge.
First, the concrete mix
specification calls for the concrete to arrive at
the project site with not more than 4 1/2% water. The Contractor is
allowed to add water, but only up to the 5% maximum. This conflicts with
the second constraint: the steel reinforcement within the wall. The mess
design
is really close. This does not allow a fairly dry concrete mix to get down
the form
work, even with lots of vibration.
The defects are fixed by
cutting out the affected area and pouring in high-strength
grout as directed by the Structural Engineer.
Close-up of
defect. |

Stub outs and box outs
Here we see to the left wall stub-outs for electrical
(grey pipes) and box-out for steel columns (round paper box-out).
It really is round, the "David Hockey" picture distorts it a little. |

Under slab work continues...like electrical junction boxes,
plumbing floor drains, ect.
